TE 838 Children's Literature and Film

Course Description:
This course opened my eyes to the differences between children's books and novels and the films based on those books. These differences are caused by the filmmaker's interpretation of the original author's perspective. I also learned how details in the story can reflect the ideals and standards of society, such as gender roles, religious beliefs, and ethnic differences. Another important component of the course was researching and analyzing how a book can become a cultural phenomenon. For this, we discussed the Harry Potter series and read scholarly articles about the complexities and controversies surrounding the books and movies. I learned that children's literature is more than just the black and white found on the page but has more depth.
