TE 804 Reflection and Inquiry in Teaching Practices II
Instructor: Wayne Hewitt
Course Description:
During this course I continued to practice inquiry and reflection of my teaching techniques and strategies. For this course I created and taught a science unit on life cycles to my first grade students. During the creation of the unit, I researched Michigan's grade level content expectations and explored the possibility of providing a hands-on and authentic lesson of observing the butterfly life cycle in the classroom. This required precise time management and pacing of my lessons, as well as effective classroom management to keep the students engaged in the phenomenon that was taking place in our classroom.
This course helped me learn to plan by forcing me to think through every possibility, problem solving any obstacles or scheduling conflicts that arose, and narrowing the topics I wanted to teach. After the lessons were taught, I was able to reflect on my teaching and my students' understanding of the life cycle through data that was collected from assessments throughout the week. This course helped me with the creating, planning, teaching, and reflecting process that I continue to use and adjust in my current teaching position.
Here are some examples of my work from this course:
